Its exactly 164 days to go, the Philippines’ summer capital will be celebrating the 100 years anniversary this coming September 1, 2009, as a chartered city. The rest of the world is counting down for the big event that will ever happen and residents are marking down the hours to the Baguio’s centennial year.
In their theme “fostering a culture of caring, the Baguio Centennial Commission’s officers and members’ mission is to consolidate and harmonize programs, projects, events and activities, engendering the sense of pride, hope and caring for the city. Their goal is to increase the tourist arrivals and to heighten the awareness and enhance appreciation of the city. Their main objectives are beautification of the city, preservation of the city’s green urban zones, establishment and development of centennial memorials, organization of events and activities to celebrate the 100 years of the city, recognition of individuals and institutions/organizations/groups which have made an impact in the development of the city and formulation of a strategic City Development Plan beyond 2009. A logo that is multicultural symbol of the beauty of Nature, appearing in numerous examples of nature scenes of many artistic styles. Butterflies are included as elements of these scenes because they most effectively represent all positive characteristics of Nature. It is also a symbol of the human spirit, love, freedom, and change. The city today is represented by a butterfly that also symbolizes the hopes and dreams of Baguio to transform into a model city of the future.
